Blessed and Broken

Matthew 5:3-10 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Father God, the world offers a false view of happiness that depends on what we own; what we do; how strong and healthy we are; and our physical appearance. Its shallow, transient, and sometimes legalistic rules for living may give temporary satisfaction at best, but it does not last. Looks and good health are fine, but they war against our earthly enemies—age and time. Also, there is no universal standard for what “good looking” really is. It is a fickle thing that depends on the eyes of the beholder. So who can measure it?

Similarly, money provides some fun and a measure of security, but those who have it never seem to have enough. They know the slightest turn of events can result in financial ruin, loss of status, and abject poverty.

Gracious God, in contrast to the world’s view, Your Word shows that authentic and durable satisfaction comes to those who live by grace through faith; walk according to Your Spirit; and abide in Your love. It resides in the hearts of those who love and obey You and who embrace lifestyles that depend on Your Holy Spirit. You guide the faithful in living transformed lives sustained by Your miraculous power, guided by Your divine providence, and secured by Your loving provision.

Lord God, we are Your true witnesses—those who are among the poor in spirit; those who mourn; those who hunger and thirst for righteousness; the meek; the merciful; and more. We are Your ambassadors, Your children, and Your friends. Lord, You call us blessed because we find true peace, true joy, and true satisfaction in You alone. Thank You for authentic and durable joy. Thank You for true contentment and the abundant life found in Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ Name we pray Amen.
