Pastor Evelyn C. Barnes
Rev. Evelyn Barnes has been happily married since 1971 to the Rev. Hubert Barnes, senior pastor at the Star of Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa. Rev. Barnes loves the Lord and treasures her God-given role as family nurturer. She is the proud mother of three adult children, and is also blessed to have five grandchildren whom she loves and cherishes.
In March 2022, Rev. E. Barnes was called to pastor the Tacony Baptist Church at 4715 Disston Street in Philadelphia, Pa. 19135. Her affiliation with the church began during the Pandemic when the former pastor, Joan Sendef, succumbed to Covid-19. Rev. Barnes was friends to Sister Etheria Johnson and Pastor Emeritus, Arthur Johnson; so, she volunteered to help during the days immediately following the untimely death of Pastor Sendef. The relationship between her and the congregation grew over the months. In September 2021 the church called her as interim pastor; and in March 2022 they called her to the role of full-time pastor. Due to heightened concerns related to Covid and in consideration of both Rev. Hubert and Evelyn Barnes’ recent bouts with cancer, the installation was kept small. On June 5, 2022 during the Sunday morning service, Rev. Hubert Barnes delivered the installation message and conducted the service.
Rev. Evelyn Barnes has a broad array of ministry and work experiences that include missions, teaching, counseling, writing for a Christian magazine, and more… In March 2010, after 23 years of service, Rev. Barnes retired from her administrative position at a child welfare agency based in Doylestown, Pa. She continued for two years after retirement to work for the agency as a consultant; deciding to completely end her child welfare services in 2012. Since 2013, Rev. Barnes has maintained the practice of sending daily prayers/meditations to approximately 75 friends, family, and church members. She sends the prayers from wherever she might find herself; whether it is a hospital room, hospital emergency ward, airport sitting area, or elsewhere.
In considering all her endeavors, Rev. Barnes states that it is her joy to serve the Lord in support of church ministries and to share in other opportunities that advance the cause of Christ in this troubled world. When confronted with life’s challenges, she clings to the words of David, who in Psalm 121 declared: “I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” (NASB)
